Board signed and drawn by Sanwa no Karasu and G-Men Magazine artist, Jiraiya ( 児雷也 ).

When I saw that Jiraiya, a incredibly famous bara artist was coming to San Francisco, I quickly checked my schedule. Working. All two days of his appearance. Ugh. Why do you affect my fangirling so much, work?! GOSH! But, I also knew that I was well overdue for a "blue flu" day (that's a day you call in sick because you're fed up with work, hence the 'blue' part). And it was suuuper close to my birthday, so, you know, why not?

My plan was to make the most of my day off, which would begin with a trip to one of my favorite fast food fried chicken restaurants. After blowing a couple weeks of diet in one sitting, I headed back on the subway and deeper into the Castro District to the bookstore where Jiraiya was slated to appear.

Although I had made it about half an hour before the event, all the seats in the small bookstore were already taken and it was standing room only. About 70 people showed, of which I was one of five women there. Jiraiya talked about his career, how difficult it was to be a homosexual man in Japan and how he got into drawing gorgeous covers featuring buxom men. At the end, we were allowed to ask for autographs. I waited until the end because I wanted a sketch. If you were male and you asked Jiraiya for a sketch, he drew you. If you were female, you could select whatever you wanted. I ended up getting Gru, a caveman who doesn't understand how procreation works, as he didn't really want to draw the kendo guy I had selected.
